CONCORD, New Hampshire - The New Hampshire State Firemen’s Association (NHSFA) is proud to announce significant updates and an expansion to the New Hampshire Fallen Firefighters Memorial, located at 98 Smokey Bear Boulevard in Concord, NH.

Constructed 19 years ago by members of the New Hampshire fire service, this memorial stands as a lasting tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. Firefighters from across the state came together to lay each brick and piece of granite, a labor of love built to honor their brothers and sisters who gave their lives in the line of duty.

“Until recently, the price of admission on this memorial was heart attacks, vehicle accidents, and injuries on the fire ground,” said President Tom Green of NHSFA. “Today, we are facing another enemy; cancer.” Cancer, now the second leading cause of death among firefighters, continues to claim lives at an alarming rate. The fire service is working tirelessly to combat this threat through improved protective tactics, advanced equipment, and early medical intervention.

A Thoughtful Expansion to Honor More Heroes

The recent updates include a new granite wall extending from the eternal flame to the flagpoles, accompanied by a new brick walkway. The wall now bears granite tablets displaying the names of New Hampshire’s earliest line-of-duty deaths, making room beneath the bell for future additions.

When the memorial was first built, no one anticipated that space for new names would eventually run out. This thoughtful expansion ensures that every fallen firefighter including past, present, and future will continue to be honored with dignity and permanence.

The brick pavers in front of the new wall will also serve as a special tribute area, allowing families, friends, and supporters to purchase commemorative bricks in honor of those battling or lost to occupational cancer as a result of their service.

Lighting the Way Forward

Additional site work has been completed to preserve and enhance the memorial’s beauty and accessibility. Improvements include updated landscaping, irrigation, cleaning, and new lighting to “paint the memorial with light” each evening, a symbolic gesture of care and remembrance.

The new lighting operates automatically from 4:00 p.m. –7:00 a.m. nightly, allowing visitors to experience the memorial’s quiet strength and solemn beauty after dusk.

Continuing the Commitment

The NHSFA extends heartfelt gratitude to all who made these updates possible, including the Line of Duty Death (LODD) Memorial Committee, our partners, and the many generous donors who contributed time, labor, and resources.

We invite the public to join us at next year’s New Hampshire Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ceremony on September 26, 2026, as we continue our tradition of honoring those whose names are etched in granite and in our hearts forever.

Support the Memorial

The New Hampshire State Firemen’s Association remains steadfast in its mission to care for this sacred place, a space for families, friends, and coworkers to gather, reflect, and remember.

We cannot continue this important work without your support. Please consider purchasing a brick or making a monetary donation to sustain and preserve the memorial for generations to come.
