The New Hampshire State Firemen’s Association is encouraging members of the New Hampshire Fire Service to take part in the upcoming Public Hearing regarding the proposed Firefighter I curriculum at the NH Fire Academy.

The hearing, scheduled for Wednesday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, represents an important opportunity for firefighters, officers, instructors, and department leaders across the state to provide feedback on the future of Firefighter I training in New Hampshire. Curriculum revisions of this scale only occur approximately every five years, making this a critical moment for the fire service community to help shape the standards that will prepare the next generation of firefighters.

Over the course of this review process, NHSFA Second Vice President Chief Blanchette served on the visiting committee, dedicating countless hours to reviewing, researching, and discussing potential improvements and updates alongside a strong group of committee members. The NHSFA extends its sincere appreciation to Chief Blanchette for his commitment, professionalism, and advocacy on behalf of New Hampshire firefighters throughout this process.

As the demands placed on today’s firefighters continue to evolve, many in the fire service believe training standards must evolve as well. Thirty years ago, firefighters were not regularly responding to the same hazards, call volume, building construction challenges, and wildland or wildland urban interface incidents seen today. The growing threat of drought conditions, increased development in previously undeveloped areas, and changing fire behavior all reinforce the importance of ensuring firefighters are trained to meet modern-day realities.

During the most recent commission meeting, the proposed curriculum was officially moved to the public comment phase. Several commissioners expressed interest in hearing directly from members of the fire service and the public before final decisions are made.

The NHSFA strongly encourages members to review the proposed curriculum and participate in the public comment process either by attending the hearing in person or by submitting comments online.

The future of firefighter training in New Hampshire depends on the voices and experience of those serving in the field today.
